How the Body Processes What the Mind Can't

Trauma and chronic stress leave a mark that isn't purely psychological. They live in the body: in patterns of tension, a nervous system that struggles to settle, and a persistent sense of being braced for something that isn't coming. For many people, talk-based approaches go a long way, but don't fully reach the physical residue that stress and trauma leave behind.

That's where body-based practices come in. Here at Sage Psychology, we offer TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) group classes in Epsom, facilitated by one of our experienced counselling psychologists and TRE experts.

What the Body Holds

When we experience stress or threat, the body prepares to act: muscles tighten, the nervous system activates, and the body mobilises its resources. In most animals, this cycle completes naturally through movement and tremoring once the threat has passed. In humans, social conditioning tends to suppress that process. We hold still, stay composed, carry on. Over time, that unreleased tension accumulates, and the nervous system can become stuck in a state of low-level activation that's difficult to shift through thinking or talking alone.

What TRE Actually Is

TRE uses a short sequence of gentle exercises to activate the body's natural tremoring reflex, the same mechanism animals use instinctively to discharge stress after a threatening experience. Rather than revisiting memories or analysing what happened, TRE works from the bottom up. The body releases what it no longer needs, and a calmer mental state tends to follow. It's a gradual process, but over time it can support greater nervous system regulation, improved resilience, and a deeper sense of ease and presence.

Who Is TRE For?

TRE isn't only for people who have experienced significant trauma. It's a relevant practice for a wide range of people, including:

  • Those carrying chronic stress, tension, or burnout who feel they've done the cognitive work but still can't fully relax

  • People who find that talk therapy helps, but something still feels unresolved at a physical level

  • Individuals with anxiety or PTSD looking for a body-based complement to existing treatment

  • Neurodivergent individuals seeking a gentle, low-demand way to regulate their nervous system

  • Anyone curious about somatic approaches to wellbeing who wants a structured, guided introduction

Enquire About TRE Group Classes

Our TRE group classes in Epsom run across four consecutive Friday mornings, in small groups of no more than five or six people. Each session includes tremoring, journaling, and guided visualisation, and by the end of the course participants are equipped to continue the practice independently at home.
