Why So Many Autistic People Go Undiagnosed into Adulthood
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) affects how a person perceives and interacts with the world, yet it remains one of the most commonly missed neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly in adults. For many people, years pass without a clear explanation for why certain environments feel overwhelming, social situations require enormous effort, or burnout arrives long before it should. If that resonates, an autism assessment could offer some meaningful answers.
Here at Sage Psychology, we offer comprehensive autism assessments for children and adults in London.
The Masking Problem
One of the main reasons Autism goes unidentified, particularly in women and girls, is masking. This is the process of learning to imitate neurotypical behaviour in order to fit in socially: mirroring others, rehearsing conversations, suppressing instinctive responses.
From the outside, a masked autistic person can appear entirely at ease. On the inside, the energy required to sustain that performance is considerable, and over time it accumulates into exhaustion, anxiety, and burnout that can be difficult to attribute to any clear cause.
What Autism Actually Looks Like
Autism doesn't present uniformly. For some people, sensory sensitivities are the most prominent feature: an acute awareness of sound, light, texture, or smell that makes busy environments genuinely difficult to tolerate. For others, it's the challenge of navigating unspoken social rules, managing transitions, or sustaining executive function across a demanding day. Many autistic individuals also have areas of deep, focused interest and strong attention to detail, qualities that are genuine strengths, but which don't erase the real challenges that exist alongside them.
What a Diagnosis Can Do
A formal autism assessment doesn't change who someone is. What it can change is their understanding of themselves, and the access they have to appropriate support. For many adults, a late diagnosis brings relief rather than disruption: a framework that finally makes sense of a lifetime of experiences.
