What Makes a High-Quality Autism Assessment?
NICE guidelines recommend that autism assessments include the following elements, all of which are built into our ASC assessments in Kingston:
A detailed developmental history
We explore early childhood development, behavioural patterns, and traits aligned with ICD-11 or DSM-5 criteria, using autism-specific tools where appropriate.
A thorough review of presenting concerns
We observe and interact with the individual, focusing on social communication, sensory processing, and behavioural patterns using standardised diagnostic frameworks.
Direct assessment of social and communication skills
Findings are reviewed by more than one clinician to ensure diagnostic accuracy and reliability.
Medical and family history review
Prenatal, perinatal, and medical history are considered, with GP referral if physical health input is required.
Consideration of differential diagnoses
We carefully assess whether autism best explains the individual’s experiences or if alternative explanations should be explored.
Screening for co-occurring conditions
Anxiety, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and emotional regulation difficulties are routinely assessed.
Strengths-based profiling
Our reports highlight strengths alongside challenges, providing practical recommendations and a clear support plan.
Comprehensive feedback session
A detailed diagnostic report and one-to-one feedback session ensure clarity and next-step guidance.
