Brain-Based Therapies
Brain-based therapies focus on how the brain processes and stores emotional experiences, particularly those linked to stress, trauma, or deeply ingrained patterns. Rather than relying solely on talking through difficulties, these approaches work directly with the brain’s natural ability to heal and reprocess distressing experiences.
At Sage Psychology, we offer two evidence-informed brain-based therapies: BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT) and Brainspotting. Both approaches aim to reduce emotional distress, shift automatic responses, and create lasting change. We provide Brain-Based Therapy in Wimbledon, Epsom, and online, supporting individuals who feel stuck despite insight or previous therapeutic work.
What Can Brain-Based Therapies Help With?
Brain-based therapies can be helpful for a range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including:
Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
Emotional overwhelm and stress responses
Intrusive thoughts or distressing memories
Low self-esteem and negative core beliefs
Performance anxiety or blocks
Unhelpful emotional reactions that feel automatic or out of proportion.
These approaches are particularly suited to individuals who find it hard to put experiences into words, or who feel their reactions are driven by the body rather than conscious thought.
How Brain-Based Therapies Work
BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) focuses on interrupting the brain’s threat response before it leads to emotional or physiological distress. It works at a pre-conscious level, helping the brain update its response to triggering situations without needing to revisit traumatic memories in detail.
Brainspotting identifies specific eye positions that correlate with stored emotional experiences in the brain. By gently focusing attention on these “brainspots,” the brain is able to process and release unresolved material in a contained, supported way.
Both approaches are structured, collaborative, and designed to feel safe and manageable, with your therapist guiding the process carefully throughout.
What to Expect from Brain-Based Therapy
At Sage Psychology, sessions are tailored to your needs, pace, and goals. Your therapist will first help you feel grounded and resourced before any deeper work begins. Therapy focuses on creating emotional safety, reducing distress, and strengthening your capacity to respond calmly and confidently to triggers.
You remain fully present and in control throughout the process, with no pressure to disclose more than feels comfortable. Progress is reviewed regularly, and the approach is adjusted as needed.
